A/AN

Indefinite Articles in English are A and An.

A/AN are invariables, you can use A if the first letter of the word is a consonant or before words starting with u and eu when they sound like Y.

For pronunciation reasons you can use AN when the next word starts with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) or with a mute H, or with a word that has a vowel sound.

Examples with A:

A boy A university
A car An honour
A european A helicopter*

*A helicopter, h  in this case is not mute, is pronounced that’s the reason why we use A.

Examples with AN:

An elephant An orange
An honour An animal
An hour An apple

*N.B.

The H at the beginning of a word, is not always pronounced in English.

  • H is pronounced in words like: House, Helicopter, Hot
  • H is not pronounced, is silent in words like : honest, hour, heir, honour
